If you want to cover a surface with aggregate concrete, then you should put some thought into your needs and preferences before you choose a mix. You have various aggregate options to choose from here.

So, before you start, ask yourself these three questions. The answers will lead you to the right mix for your surface.

1. Which Aggregate Mix Do You Prefer?

Aggregates are added to concrete in various ways. The method you choose affects your cost and the way your concrete will look at the end of the job.

If you don't mind which aggregate goes into your concrete, then a standard mix is the most cost-effective solution. Here, you buy a ready-mixed product. You won't have much, if any, choice over the type of aggregate that goes into the concrete and its finished effects.

If you want to use a specific aggregate or want more control over how the aggregate looks on the finished surface, then topping or seeded mixes are a better bet. These mixes are more customisable.

If you use a topping aggregate, then your contractor lays a base concrete surface at the start of the job. When this layer is dry, they add more concrete. This top layer contains the aggregate of your choice in your chosen quantity.

A seeded mix gives you even more control. Here, you place the aggregate into wet concrete. This option works well if you want to use your aggregate to create a design or to follow a colour scheme.

2. How Will You Use the Surface?

Some people use an aggregate mix for its cosmetic advantages. However, these mixes also have some practical benefits.

For example, an exposed aggregate creates a rougher and bumpier surface. This is a good option if you need extra traction on paths or paving. People are less likely to slip on an exposed aggregate surface.

So, think about how you will use your surface. The size and shape of the aggregate you use affects the surface's walkability, traction and longevity under heavy traffic use.

3. Do You Have a Colour Preference?

While some people don't need their concrete surfaces to have special colours, others like to use non-standard colours. For example, you might want to use a coloured aggregate if you are concreting paths in your garden to make the paving look more attractive.

You can also play around with your base concrete mix here. For example, you can use a coloured concrete to complement your aggregate or to create a contrasting look.
